The Program:

Enjoy a 3 days tour visiting Tiwanaku. Andean scholars recognize this important Pre-Columbian archaeological site located in western Bolivia, as one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire, flourishing as the ritual and administrative capital of a major state power for approximately five hundred years. Titicaca Lake at 3800m of altitude is considered as the highest and one of the largest navigable lake on the world. Here we find the Sun Island known as the site where the Inca Empire was born.

Day 1: La Paz – Tiawanaku - Copacabana

In the morning at about 9 a.m. you will be picked from your hotel in La Paz for an overland trip of 70km towards the archaeological site of Tiawanaku (3,000 B.C. – 600 A.C.). Visit the temples of Kalasaya, Akapana, Underground, and Gate of the Sun, Puma Punku and the museum. Lunch on site (not included). In the afternoon, transfer along the Royal Andean Mountain Range to the city of Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. On the way, we will stop at the town of Huatajata where we will visit mortuary towers (known as "Chullpas") of several periods. Here we also find the Limachi brothers and their interesting museum including info about all the reed rafts expeditions of our century and a full size reproduction of the RA II used by Thor Heyerdahl in his expedition across the Atlantic. Hotel accommodations.

Day 2: Copacabana – Sun Island

The Island of the Sun represent one of the greatest natural and cultural monument of Bolivia. Located in the southern side of Lake Titicaca (3,810 meters above sea level), the Island (together with the Moon Island) houses more than one hundred and fifty ancient settlements. During the Inca occupation of the region (around A.D. 1470 – 1532), this island was the final destination of ritual pilgrimages from all around the empire. However, recently recovered archaeological evidence indicates that the sacred nature of these islands extends back at least to the Tiawanaku Empire (A.D. 600 – 1,100). Prior to this time, humans first occupied the island as early as 2000 B.C., and have continuously lived there for millennia. The natural beauty of this island is impossible to describe; you simply have to visit them to appreciate it. Here we will make a 4 hours hike to visit the different pre-Inca and Inca remains, visit small villages and enjoy the landscape. Overnight in a local small hotel on the Sun Island. B.

Day 3: Sun Island - Copacabana - La Paz

We will enjoy a free morning on the Sun Island where you can simply enjoy the beautiful scenery or make another short hike. Then at about 11 a.m. we cruise back to Copacabana where we make a short visit to "La Basilica", the Incas observatory and bath. Overland transport back to the city of La Paz where we will leave you at your hotel. B.
