salar de uyuni

Uyuni is the highest and the largest salt desert in the world. It is located southwest of Potosi at an average altitude of 4000m. The Salt fields of Uyuni and Coipasa are unique, with unusual fauna for this region, and such as pink and white flamingos, geese, ducks, coots, etc. Our tours (combination of 4 WD transport and daily hikes) will take us to one of the most impressive landscapes in South America.
The best months for visiting this amazing area are from April to December (winter) when the dryness of the weather allows traveling without dangers. In the rainy season (January to March), we can find muddy bays which can block the vehicles. The icy winds, the low temperatures (-10º C to -15º C) and the fact that drinking water does not exist in this area, make this beautiful place a dangerous one if you venture to cross it without an experienced guide.

Accommodations:

Day 1Day 2

Uyuni airport (or hotel in Uyuni) – San Pedro de Quemez Tayka Hotel de Piedra (or Villa Candelaria for our economic tour).

In the morning, our guide and transport will be waiting for you at the airport (or we pick up you from your hotel). They will greet you and then immediately start the drive south towards the train cemetery where we make a short stop to see the remains of nineteenth and early 20th century steam locomotives, used for the mining industry of Uyuni and Potosi.

Then we drive towards Alota region on the highlands of Bolivia and on the way if lucky perhaps we can observe the Andean Ñandu (Ostrich) wandering on the high plateau. Crossing the Rock Forest, an interesting geological area, we continue towards Laguna Hedionda where we can observe three species of flamingos. This scenic area gives you excellent opportunities for photography. Our next stop will be to observe the active Ollague. Our drive then will continue to cross the Salar de Chiguana, and then finally we arrive to San Pedro de Quemez village where we will overnight in the hotel Tayka Hotel de Piedra (or overnight at Villa Candelaria salt hotel for our economic tour). Dinner and enjoy a well-deserved rest. (LB, D)

Tayka Hotel de Piedra (or Villa Candelaria) - Uyuni.

An early awake up followed by a hearty breakfast will prepare us for our drive towards the impressive Salar de Uyuni. First, our guide will explain you about the history of the small village of San Pedro de Quemez where we make a short hike to visit the ruins of this town burned during the war between Chile and Bolivia. Then our drive will take us toward the Galaxy cave, a dried sub aqueous cavern, formed before the ice age, corresponding to volcanic eruptions on waters of the Minchin lake (today Salar). From the ceiling of the cavern, it displays calcareous bodies with capricious forms of solidification of the magma in contact with water. Then we enter into the flat salt desert of Uyuni giving us a spectacular view of the Salt Desert surrounded by volcanos. We will drive towards the shores of Isla Pescado (Fish Island) a rocky hilly covered in trichocerus cacti. A large population of viscachas (Andean rodents) inhabits its rocky slopes, which also afford views of the flat region that are reminiscent of the Polar region, dominated by the colors blue and white. We can hike up to the top of one of the summits of the hill and enjoy a fantastic view of the spectacular flat, White Sea of hexagonal salt tiles. Then a short drive will take us towards Isla Incahuasi (Home of the Inca), another interesting hilly outcrop situated in the center of the Salar and with rock formations containing the remains of corals and seashells. The island has species of cactus that grows up to 7m tall, at a rate of 1 centimeter per year, making them up to 700 years old. Here we make a hike up to the summit of the hill from where, we get and extraordinary view of the surreal Salar de Uyuni. After lunch in the local small restaurant, we will continue our drive towards the small village of Colchani located beside the Salar de Uyuni and is a home of the Cooperative Rosario – the main plant for the iodization of salt. After visiting the artisanal salt factory we will then make our final drive towards your hotel in Uyuni (hotel accommodations are not included). End of our services. (B, D).
