Uyuni is the highest and the largest salt desert in the world. It is located south-west off Potosi at an average altitude of 4,000m. The Salt fields of Uyuni and Coipasa are unique, with unusual fauna for this region such as pink and white flamingos, geese, ducks, coots, etc. Our tours (in combination of 4-WD transport and daily hikes) will take us to one of the most impressive landscapes in South America. The best months for visiting this amazing area are from May to November when the dry weather allows traveling without many dangers. In the rainy season (December to April), we can find muddy bays which can block the vehicles. The icy winds, the low temperatures (-10º C to -15º C) and the fact that drinking water is not present in this area, make this beautiful place a dangerous one, if you venture to cross it without an experienced guide.

Note: In our Salar de Uyuni tours, we use comfortable jeeps for maximum four participants (+ guide). Accommodations are in small simple small hotels with rooms for two people and with private facilities.
Note: For safety reasons, we always provide a Spanish/English speaking guide.

Day 1: Uyuni – Mallku.

In the morning, we depart from the city of Uyuni towards the town of Mallku. Our first stop will be at the Train Cemetery where you can see the remains of nineteenth and early 20th century steam locomotives. Then we continue our drive south, to the historical town of San Cristobal, a place well known for its silver mining activities, and still running on the present days. Then we continue our drive through the high Andean plateaus. On the way, and with some luck, perhaps we will be able to see the Andean Ostrich (locally known as Suri or Ñandu de los Andes). We will also stop at the Waterfall Canyon and later on, we will stop for a visit to the place known as “Valle de Rocas” (Stone Valley also known as the Stone Town), an interesting geological formation. Then we drive south to Villamar and finally we arrive to the small town of Mallku where we will overnight in a local small hotel. Lunch, Dinner.

Day 2: Mallku – Laguna Colorada – Villa Candelaria.

This day we drive southwest towards the Eduardo Abaroa National Park. Our drive will take us through the bofedales, green oasis in the middle of the desert where we can observe llamas and birds. Our drive takes us to Quetena from where we can get clear views of the Uturunco Volcano (6020 m). We will pass the Salar de Corina where we can observe the Ulexita fields (borax). Continuing our drive we arrive to the beautiful Laguna Verde from where and weather permitting we can observe the volcanic cone of the steep Licancahur Volcano (5920 m). After this we follow the road which will take us to the Dali Valley where we observe strange rock formation, continuing afterwards to “Sol de Manana” geysers. Later on we will arrive at the shores of the beautiful Laguna Colorada, a lagoon lying at an altitude of 4,350 metres, and covers an area of 60 km². The rich red colouration derives from algae and plankton, which thrives in its minerals. Numerous flamingos, three species of which breed and inhabit the lagoon. To see these pink posers strutting through icy mineral lagoons at 5000 m. will make you abandon timeworn associations between flamingos, coconut palms and hot steamy tropics. From Laguna Colorada we drive north towards the “Arbol de Piedra” a well-known rock formation located on the high Altiplano of this area. Then we continue our drive north passing several beautiful lagoons: Laguna Honda, Laguna Hedionda and Laguna Cañapas. Then we drive towards the base of the Ollague Volcano and from here we make our last push to arrive to the small lodge in Villa Candelaria where we will overnight. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3: Villa Candelaria – Salar de Uyuni - Uyuni.

In the morning, we start our drive towards the border of the Salar de Uyuni where we will make a visit to the Galaxy cave, a dried sub aqueous cavern, formed before the ice age, corresponding to volcanic eruptions on waters of the Minchin Lake. From the ceiling of the cavern, it displays calcareous bodies with capricious forms of solidification of the magma in contact with water.  Then we enter into the awesome Salar de Uyuni crossing the spectacular flat salt desert towards Incahuasi Island, an interesting hilly outcrop situated in the center of the Salar and with rock formations containing the remains of corals and seashells. The island also has species of cactus that grows up to 7 m tall, at a rate of 1 centimeter per year, making them up to 700 years old. Here we make a hike up to the summit of the hill, which offers an extraordinary view of the surreal Salar de Uyuni. After lunch in a small local restaurant, we will continue our drive to Ojos del Salar and from here towards the village of Colchani, whichlies beside the Salar de Uyuni and is a home of the Cooperative Rosario – the main plant for the iodisation of salt. After visiting the artisanal salt factory, we make our final drive to Uyuni. Transfer to the airport or to your hotel (not included) in Uyuni. Breakfast, Lunch.
